Photogrammetry for Speed Calculations
LEVA International, Inc.
|
Photogrammetry/Mapping | Online | More Info |
|
Photogrammetry is the science of extracting measurements from photographs and video footage. When applied to collision reconstruction, these methods are particularly valuable for determining the speed of vehicles and other moving objects captured on surveillance cameras, dashcam footage, traffic monitoring systems, and other video sources. This course focus on the importance of understanding the video structure to extract speeds from both stationary and moving cameras. Students will develop a foundational understanding of photogrammetric principles, camera calibration, feature tracking, and error quantification, so they can effectively apply these techniques and defend their speed determinations against technical and legal scrutiny.

Crash Investigation 1 is the foundation class for NUCPS’ Traffic Crash and Reconstruction courses. The course offers an in-depth study of the skills needed to investigate a traffic collision scene, thoroughly covering the techniques for recognizing and properly recording roadway and vehicle crash evidence, as well as information from involved parties and witnesses. Students learn to measure and photograph accident scenes and to create sketches and after-crash diagrams. Crash 1 also addresses how collected data are used to reconstruct traffic accidents and introduces the use of electronic devices for collecting and recording at-scene data.

The third course in our essential five-class sequential series, Vehicle Dynamics expands from the skills in Math & Physics Review for Crash Reconstruction to cover the advanced physics and math concepts necessary for those who wish to attend Traffic Crash Reconstruction 1 and Traffic Crash Reconstruction 2. This course focuses on mechanics, the study of motion and forces, and the effects of such forces during a crash.
Course curriculum covers Newton’s Laws of Motion and proper application of physics principles to equations of motion in order to solve for velocity, time, acceleration, and distances of travel. Following the presentation of these concepts, instruction continues to vehicle braking, drag factors, and the coefficients of friction and time-distance analysis.
