This course shows you how to merge all the data together, build your scene in both 2D and 3D perspective, perform analysis and speed calculations, and print reports in the Trimble Reveal Software. For many traffic crash reconstructionists, the topic of energy can be intimidating, mysterious or down right scary. Because of this, reconstructionists shy away from utilizing energy methods in their analysis. This course will help de-mystify the concept of energy and present energy-based methods and techniques to use in analyzing traffic crashes. During the course, you will learn to view and analyze crashes from an energy point of view. We will explore energy methods beginning with the basics and progressing to more advanced concepts. We will discuss the often-misunderstood topics of Equivalent Barrier Speed (EBS) and delta-V and you will learn different ways to analyze collisions, such as damage momentum, where a traditional conservation of linear momentum may not be the most appropriate analysis. We will also explore the topic of crush. We will examine the basis of the three familiar energy equations that use crush measurements. Outside projects will provide you with “hands-on” experience in examining and measuring crash vehicles and then calculating damage energy and speeds. This course will help you become more comfortable in utilizing energy-based methods in your analysis as we examine the underlying science that computer-based “crash” programs rely upon. It is an excellent complement to other training courses that teach you how to use “crash” software. You should have a firm understanding of the topics of traffic crash reconstruction and conservation of linear momentum as well as strong basic math skills.

FIRST IN A SERIES OF THREE COURSES This course will equip you with the necessary skills to conduct a thorough traffic crash investigation and properly document your findings for courtroom presentation. We will show you the proper procedures for measuring, scale diagramming, and photographing in order to record physical evidence and essential facts available only at the crash scene. You will learn the fundamentals of mathematics, physics and engineering as they pertain to crash investigations and the proper mathematical equations to apply for the type of crash being investigated. Finally, you will learn to analyze the information to determine what happened before, during, and after the collision.

This course is a Hybrid remote synchronous course offering. It will be both live in-person at the host agency, as well as live on Zoom for anyone wishing to attend remotely. Advance your understanding of the human role in vehicle crashes! This course focuses on a data-driven assessment and explanation of the human role in traffic collisions. Instructor Jeff Muttart covers the essential research for scientific crash investigations, which includes such topics as response and reaction times (and delays), recognition, perception, nighttime recognition and impairment, and more. Students obtain a better understanding of driver and pedestrian behavior in various crash scenarios and learn to compare and evaluate human actions. Participants also are introduced to the Driver Research Institute’s Response software, a cloud-based human factors analysis tool. Response is based on research from course instructor Dr. Jeff Muttart and other industry professionals. Students learn how to incorporate this software into their crash reconstructions. Attendees receive a 7-day trial of Response.

TCR1 Remote/Blended Learning provides the same curriculum as its on-ground counterpart, only in a live online setting. In Traffic Crash Reconstruction 1, students synthesize lessons from the previous courses in order to learn to determine how a crash occurred. Our up-to-date, authoritative curriculum focuses on analyzing and interpreting information collected during previous stages of an investigation in order to describe the crash and the events leading to actual impact. Students apply the lessons from daily lecture material to real-world case study situations — an instruction format that provides students with the training necessary to reconstruct traffic collisions. After successfully completing this course, students will have the ability to reconstruct crash situations using momentum and mechanics.
